Thank you for all the birthday cards. I opened them all at once while enjoying a cup of tea the afternoon of my birthday. I was touched by some, and laughed over others, even the one that said, “You’re not old until the fat lady sings.” It was a “musical” card so when I opened it, the fat lady sang, Another featured a cow saying that she had lost her cake recipe and asking if I would like a “pie” instead. Fortunately, she wasn’t in charge of the social hour on June 15, following the last sermon of my interim. The cake was beautiful, delicious, and a wonderful surprise Thank you, again.
A few days later, I attended my last board meeting and it ended on a high note. Shari Mellin, Co-Chair of the Building Committee, was there to update the board on progress to date and to discuss the next steps. As is typical of the board, their deliberations were thoughtful and respectful. They took seriously the congregation’s direction to move forward on the building project and contracted with Aggie Sweeney to guide you through the process. From my vantage point, this was a good decision. The guidance of a UUA consultant was invaluable as the Fort Wayne congregation developed their plans and then built an addition.
Although I won’t be here, I plan to follow your progress and will be anxious to see the design as it develops. This next year will be an exciting one for you as you welcome in Amy DeBeck and her family, and continue working on your strategic longrange plan.
I, too, am looking forward to the next year, especially now that my son and his family are in California. I’m hoping to spend a good bit of time with my grandson and get to know him, again. When I last saw him, he was learning to say, “Bubbles.” Now he says, “I needs beach;” in just a few short weeks, he’s learned the wonders of the Golden State.
When I see you at the party on July 19, I will just have returned from Rug School in Holland, Michigan where I will start a large Oriental, which is a little daunting, but I am looking forward to it. Other than that, I’ll be around home working on the garden and culling files. I am oncall until the ritual transfer of the cell phone takes places at the end of July. We’ll notify you so you’ll know who’ll answer when you call.
Again, I want to tell you what a good two years this has been. I couldn’t have asked for a better congregation during this time.
Wishing you all the very best,
